HOW TO – Change the Mobile Network Settings (xSeries)

NOTE: If you have already run the Setup Wizard previously and/or followed the Quick Start Guide then it’s likely you would have already set them up, but you can use this article if you want change them again.

If you change the SIM card in your device then it’s likely that you may need to change the mobile network settings for your device – specifically the APN (Access Point Name) – to the those required and specified by your mobile network. Whilst the xSeries devices have an Auto mode which will attempt to detect and configure the settings from the SIM card, this does not always work and usually it’s more reliable to specifically set them.

If the APN settings are not correct, then you will find that the SIM card will register and connect to the mobile network OK, but you will not be able to access the Internet. The APN settings are specifically related to the Internet connection with the mobile network.

Login to the Device

To change the settings, you will need to login to the device’s Admin Panel. If you don’t know how to do this, please read the article HOW TO – Access the BeamOS Admin Panel (xSeries) first.

Once you have logged into the unit and are on the Status Overview page, you will need to navigate to the Mobile Configuration page.

Mobile Configuration

To go to the Mobile Configuration page, click the Network drop-down menu in the top menu bar, and then select Mobile.

If the Auto APN box is checked and you cannot get access to the Internet, then uncheck it so that you can enter the details manually.

  • In the APN drop-down box select — custom —
  • Enter the Custom APN value for the SIM and network (for example for Vodafone SIMs supplied by us, this would usually be internet)
  • Select CHAP from the Authentication Method drop-down
  • Enter the Username supplied by the network (for example, for Vodafone SIMs supplied by us, this would usually be web)
  • Enter the Password supplied by the network (for example, for Vodafone SIMs supplied by us, this would usually be web)

Please see this article for a list of some known APNs for common mobile networks. (Opens a new window).

Once you have entered the details, click the Save button at the bottom of the page.

The modem and network services will then restart and will attempt to connect to the mobile network with the new settings. In some circumstances, you may need to power cycle the device.
